About Herbie Hancook

Hancock is an American Pianist, composer and bandleader while at the same time an accomplished keyboardist. Born on April 12, 1940, Hancock ‘ work in music elaborated the role of Jazz rhythm section and provided the basic architecture for post-bop sound. His most famous solo works are ‘Cantaloupe Island’, ‘Chameleon’, ‘Maiden Voyage’ and ‘Watermelon Man’. His 2007′ tribute album ‘River: The Joni Letters’ won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2008. This was the second  jazz album ever win this award after Getz/Gilberto.

Hancock was selected as UESCO Goodwill Ambassador  for promotion of intercultural Dialogue in 2011. He practices Buddhism and is a member of Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist Association. As a part of his religious practice, he recites Nam Rengo Kyo (the Buddhist Chant) everyday.

He joined as a professor in the faculty of Department of Music in University of California Los Angeles in 2013 where he teaches Jazz Music. He is also named Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University in 2014. Under this title, a person will be giving a series of six lectures on poetry by elaborating it in the broadest sense through poetic expressions.

Hancock started learning classical music at a very early age. At the age of 11, he played at young people’ concert (1952) where his work was initially recognized. On the first time when he heard Chris Anderson playing, he requested Chris to let him learn from him as a student. He recognizes Chris as his Harmonic guru. After he left Grinnell College, Hancock moved to Chicago and worked with Donald Byrd and Colman Hawkins. During the same period he started taking courses at Roosevelt University. Later, he did his graduation in Electrical Engineering and Music from Grinnell.

About Billy Joel

William Martin Billy Joel is the sixth best selling recording artist in United States and also ranked as the third best selling solo performer. He is a pianist, songwriter and composer as well. Since the release of his first hit song ‘Piano Man’ in 1973, he has become a music icon in United States. The ‘Greater Hits’, his compilation album is the third best-selling album in United States by number of discs shipped. In 1992, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, in 1999 Rock & Roll Hall of fame and in 2006 inducted into Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

He received Johnny Mercer Award in 2001 from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Joe received the Kennedy Center of Honors in 2013 which is the greatest national award for influencing American Culture through arts. After 1993, he stopped writing or releasing Pop/Rock material except for his two songs ‘All my Life’ and ‘Christmas in Fallujah’.

Joel inspiration was The Beetles, after watching them on The Ed Sullivan Show. He decided to pursue his career in music then. He attributed this event as the life changer while he had no plan earlier to play rock as a career. Joel constituted a musical group Echoes and left high school after the group got famous in New York. Joel also played piano on several records while working with Kama Sutra Productions and Shadow Morton. Echoes changed their name first to Emeralds and then to Lost Souls in 1965. However, in 1967 Joel left the band and joined another group Hassles, which had signed with United Artist Records.

Joel contracted with a record company name family Productions and recorded his first solo album ‘Cold Spring Harbour’, releasing it in 1971. Two of his popular songs ‘She’s Got A Way’ and ‘Everybody Loves You Now’ which were a part of his album ‘Cold Spring Harbour’ went quite unnoticed till the time they were released as live performances on ‘Songs in the Attic’ in 1981. In 1984, a remastered version of his album ‘ Cold Spring Harbour’ was released by Columbia which was ranked as 158th in United States and 95th in United Kingdom. Joel performed locally in New York in the fall of 1971 and moved to Los Angeles in 1972.

In 1973, he released his first album with Columbia the ‘Piano Man’, the title track of which became his signature song. Joel released in second album ‘Streetlife Serenade’ in Los Angeles. His album ‘The Stranger’ won Grammy Award for Record of the Year and his song ‘Just The Way You Are’ as the Song of the Year.

About the Author

Douglas Coupland is a Canadian novelist born in December 1961 in West Germany. Thirteen of his novels have so far been published while seven non-fiction books also adds to his credit. He also contributed towards films and television by his dramatic works and screen plays. He received an honorary degree from University of British Columbia in May 2010. He further received an honorary Doctor of Letters from Simon Fraser University in 2007. In recognition of his work and contribution to literature, Douglas was also awarded honorary doctorate degree from OCAD University presented to him in University’ 2013 Convocation at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto Ontario. He was given membership of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2007.

He wrote his first book Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture in 1991. The term Generation X was although existed before but he used this term in his novel to describe about the generations that were born in late 1950s and 1960s. The book was a great commercial success.

His second novel Shampoo Planet was published in 1992 which was focused on next generation ‘Global Teens’ who are born with computers and music videos surrounded them. He comes back to Generation X in his third book, Life after God (1994) which is a collection of short stories about faithless and hopeless young adults. In 1995 he wrote ‘Microserfs’ the story of which revolves around young computer programmers who are dissatisfied with this big corporate’ environment. His other novels includes Girlfriend in Coma (1998), Miss Wyoming (2001), All Families are Psychotic (2001) and God Hates Japan (2001) among others.

His non-fiction writings were Polaroids from the Dead (1996), Lara’ s Book : Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider phenomenon (1998), City of Glass (2000) and Extra Ordinary Canadians : Marshall McLuhan.

Douglas is not only a writer but also a famous visual artist and his work has been exhibited and recognized throughout North America and Europe. In collaboration with the architectural firm ‘Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg, he also designed a downtown Toronto Park in which Douglas’ own sculptures are incorporated.

Douglas is a well-known commentator on art, literature and culture in Canada, America and Europe. He was nominated for The Scotiabank Giller Prize in 2006 and 2010, and Roger Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize in 2009.

An Event at Zocalo to Discuss: Will Obama care Really Help L.A.’s Immigrants?


About the Event

The event is organized on Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 7:30 pm to discuss about the details and implications of The Affordable Care Act of Obama as it affect the Immigrants of Los Angeles and in general the health care services as a whole. This Act has been portrayed as to have a universal cover for health care but as a matter of fact it do not even cover the undocumented adult immigrants and they have been deprived of the benefits of this Act and in the same way the obligations. At the same time not only the undocumented immigrants but also many thousands of people who are living lawfully in the country would not be able to get cover under the Act. At the same time, the complications in this Act are more likely to affect the immigrant’s families in which the legal status of each member and the English Language skill differs. The discussion will cover how the immigrants whether they are documented or not can go through the bill which is famous for it’s difficult to understand complexities. It will also be discussed if the new clinics and further investment in health care which will take place as a result of provisions of this law will ultimately benefit the immigrants. Will the expansion of US citizen coverage and that of the Green Card holders will further isolate people who recently arrived US.

The Visitors

The health insurance study director at University of California, Los Angeles Centre for Health Policy Research, Shana Alex Lavarreda will be among the prominent speakers to discuss how immigrant’s communities in Los Angeles and throughout the California could cope with the new health care laws that are brought through this Act.

Miss Shana Alex has previously worked on numerous projects with respect to Health care which includes the Evaluation of 12 Months Continuous Eligibility in Medi-Cal Project, the California Health Benefits Review Program (CHBRP) and State of health insurance in California (SHIC). She is also an expert in analysis of health insurance data from California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) through which she gives comprehensive estimates on the health care services in the state. Her research particularly focuses on the discontinued heath insurance with respect to low income children and further its impact on access to health care.

Among other speakers will be CEO St. John’s Well Chid and Family Centre, Jim Mangia and health policy attorney at National Immigration Law Centre Gabrielle Lessard.

The Hollywood Bowl

Hollywood Bowl is an amphitheatre built in the 1920’s is located in the north of Hollywood Boulevard.  It gets its distinctive name because of its egg shell shaped construction.  This place has a long history of demolishing and reconstruction of its designed shells from acoustics point of view.  However in 2003 it as constructed keeping in view the previous designs and the most technologically advanced acoustics.  Many a great performances have been held here by well known artists and bands.  Behind the shell on can see the famous Hollywood hills and the famous Hollywood sign.  The highest number of fans made to this place is more than twenty six thousand.

Parking at the bowl can be a difficult task because it is very limited.
